Two-time Olympic gold medalist Mo Farah detained on terrorist suspicion

So how was your Christmas? Mo Farah celebrated his by getting taken for a possible terrorist. The two-time gold medal winner for Great Britain at this past summer's games was traveling in Oregon and was questioned by U.S. Customs officials after they noticed his Somali ancestry. "I couldn’t believe it," Farah said, according to the Sun. "Because of my Somali origin, I get detained every time I come through US Customs. This time I even got my medals out to show who I am, but they wouldn’t have it." (Tricksy terrorists, using gold medals! What will they think of next?) Farah, 29, was born in Somalia but moved to Britain with his English - born father as a child. He won the 5000m and 10,000m races this summer in London. Last year, he moved to Oregon to train with the legendary Alberto Salazar at the headquarters of Nike.

This isn't the first time he's had difficulties with immigration; a previous attempt to get a residency visa saw him detained on terrorist suspicion with the threat of being barred from entering the country for 90 days. Salazar used some contacts to sort that one out. This one apparently was sorted out after some questioning.
So all ended out well for Farah. This Christmas was the first he was able to spend with his family in four years because of his training regimen. And it's also the first he'll have with his twin daughters, born two weeks after the Olympics ended. He had his two medals engraved with their names, Aisha and Amani.
Look, a sports column is not the location for a discussion on airport security protocol, but it would seem that despite the we-check-everyone mandate that has grannies and infants swept with wands and patted down, there may be a wee bit of profiling going on here. Fortunately, you'd be hard pressed to find a more genial athlete in sports than Farah, so he'll move on from this just fine.
Good thing he didn't try to run. That would've been embarrassing for everyone involved.

Obama wants gun violence measures passed in 2013

U.S. President Barack Obama tells NBC's Meet the Press that if Congress fails to resolve fiscal cliff it will hurt financial markets. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Recalling the shooting rampage that killed 20 first graders as the worst day of his presidency, President Barack Obama pledged to put his "full weight" behind legislation aimed at preventing gun violence. Obama voiced skepticism about the National Rifle Association's proposal to put armed guards in schools following the Dec. 14 tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. The president made his comments Saturday in an interview that aired Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press." Instead, the president vowed to rally the American people around an agenda to limit gun violence, adding that he still supports increased background checks and bans on assault weapons and high-capacity bullet magazines. He left no doubt it will be one of his top priorities next year.
"It is not enough for us to say, 'This is too hard so we're not going to try,'" Obama said.
"I think there are a vast majority of responsible gun owners out there who recognize that we can't have a situation in which somebody with severe psychological problems is able to get the kind of high capacity weapons that this individual in Newtown obtained and gun down our kids," he added. "And, yes, it's going to be hard."
The president added that he's ready to meet with Republicans and Democrats, anyone with a stake in the issue.
The schoolhouse shootings, coming as families prepared for the holidays, have elevated the issue of gun violence to the forefront of public attention. Six adult staff members were also killed at the elementary school. Shooter Adam Lanza committed suicide, apparently as police closed in. Earlier, he had killed his mother at the home they shared.
The tragedy immediately prompted calls for greater gun controls. But the NRA is strongly resisting those efforts, arguing instead that schools should have armed guards for protection. Some gun enthusiasts have rushed to buy semiautomatic rifles of the type used by Lanza, fearing sales may soon be restricted.
Obama seemed unimpressed by the NRA proposal. "I am skeptical that the only answer is putting more guns in schools," he said. "And I think the vast majority of the American people are skeptical that that somehow is going to solve our problem." The president said he intends to press the issue with the public. "The question then becomes whether we are actually shook up enough by what happened here that it does not just become another one of these routine episodes where it gets a lot of attention for a couple of weeks and then it drifts away," Obama said. "It certainly won't feel like that to me. This is something that - you know, that was the worst day of my presidency. And it's not something that I want to see repeated."
Separately, a member of the president's cabinet said Sunday that rural America may be ready to join a national conversation about gun control. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the debate has to start with respect for the Second Amendment right to bear arms and recognition that hunting is a way of life for millions of Americans.
But Vilsack said Newtown has changed the way people see the issue. "I really believe that this is a different circumstance and a different situation," Vilsack said on CNN.
Vilsack said he thinks it's possible for Americans to come together. "It's potentially a unifying conversation," he said. "The problem is that these conversations are always couched in the terms of dividing us. This could be a unifying conversation, and Lord knows we need to be unified." Besides passing gun violence legislation, Obama also listed deficit reduction and immigration as top priorities for 2013. A big deficit reduction deal with Republicans proved elusive this month, and Obama is now hoping Senate Democratic and Republican leaders salvage a scaled-back plan that avoids tax increases for virtually all Americans.
In addition, he issued a defense of former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, who has been mentioned as one of the leading candidates to replace Leon Panetta as defense secretary. Hagel supported the 2002 resolution approving U.S. military action in Iraq, but later became a critic of the war. He has been denounced by some conservatives for not being a strong enough ally of Israel. Also, many liberals and gay activists have banded against him for comments he made in 1998 about an openly gay nominee for an ambassadorship. Obama, who briefly served with Hagel in the Senate, stressed that he had yet to make a decision but called Hagel a "patriot." Hagel "served this country with valor in Vietnam," the president said. "And (he) is somebody who's currently serving on my intelligence advisory board and doing an outstanding job."
Obama noted that Hagel had apologized for his 14-year-old remark on gays.

Jessica Simpson Reveals Baby Bump in Bikini

Jessica Simpson bares her baby bump. (Twitter)Just five days after she confirmed on Twitter that's she pregnant with her second child, Jessica Simpson is proudly showing off her baby bump!
On Sunday, the 32-year-old singer tweeted out a shot of herself wearing a bikini and an open beach wrap that allowed her to put her bare pregnant belly on display. "Bumpin' and Proud!" Simpson wrote. The fashion mogul has been enjoying a Hawaiian getaway with her fiancé Eric Johnson, 7-month-old daughter Maxwell Drew, her mom Tina, and her sister Ashlee and Ashlee's 4-year-old son Bronx.
Simpson's pregnancy news came as a bit of a surprise since she only gave birth to her daughter – who's nicknamed Maxi – in May, and because she's also a spokesperson for Weight Watchers, the program which helped her drop a reported 60 pounds after her first pregnancy. The company announced earlier this week that Simpson will be taking a break from their regimen while she's expecting, but she still plans on eating healthfully. In a new Weight Watchers ad, Simpson notes that, "Being healthy has become a part of who I am, which is great timing because I'm having another baby. I feel like I'm on top of the world!"

Jess flaunted her first baby bump when she posed nude on the April cover of Elle magazine. "I swear, I will croak if she asks me for a pair of Nikes instead of Christian Louboutins!" she said of her unborn daughter at the time. Simpson added that she was worried her little girl would inherit former NFL player Johnson's athleticism. "We're gonna have this athletic girl and I won't even be able to take her shopping!"
Do you think Simpson will have another girl or a boy the second time around?

The Most Inspirational Stories of 2012

Once called "The World's Ugliest Woman," Lizzie Velasquez was born with a medical condition so rare that just two other people in the world are thought to have it. She weighs just 60 pounds and has no adipose tissue, and cannot create muscle, store energy, or gain weight. She inspired women the world over earlier this year when, during an interview with CNN, she said that people "should stop staring and start learning." Since then, she told Yahoo! Shine, she's been flooded with speaking requests and supportive emails. In 2013 she's hoping write her third book (her second, "Be Beautiful, Be You" came out in September), continue her work as a motivational speaker, and meet as many people as possible in 2013. "There are so many different people out there with so many different stories," she told Yahoo! Shine. "Hearing their stories is what inspires me. That's what keeps me going."
Having no body fat or muscle tissue makes Lizzie Velasquez prone to injuries that most people would never think about -- like stress fractures in her feet from walking or standing, since the bottoms of her feet have no padding. (She's in a cast right now. "I fracture my foot if I'm not wearing the supportive shoes I'm supposed to wear," she confessed to Yahoo! Shine. "I'm usually wearing the cute shoes that match my outfit.") But it's made her think about New Years' resolutions, and how people are often focused on improving their outward appearances. "Instead of making it a goal to lose weight or to grow your hair longer, whatever it is to make yourself physically better, people should look toward making not only their character better, but helping others," she suggests. When his 10-year-old son, Akian, who has autism, was having problems in class, Stuart Chaifetz knew there was more going on than he was being told. So he rigged a recording device for his son and sent him to school. What he heard was appalling. Angry adults yelling at kids to "shut up," having inappropriate personal conversations in front of the children, and goading Akian to the point of tears -- and then laughing at him. After he couldn't get the school to fix the problem completely, Chaifetz put the recordings online and demanded that the teachers apologize to the boy they had abused. "I want an apology, not for me, but so one day I can play this video back for my son and say Akian, you didn't deserve anything that happened to you," he said. "It's not about money. It's about dignity." (Read his story: Dad Secretly Tapes Autistic Son at School.)

Dawn Loggins was attending a prestigious summer program on scholarship in 2011 when she discovered that her parents -- drug abusers who struggled for years -- had left the state, abandoning her, her brother, and their grandmother. Instead of wallowing or worrying, though, the teen was determined to succeed, in spite of her new homeless status. She got a job doing janitorial work before class, moved into a friend's home, and caught up on classes online. In June she graduated from high school -- and got ready to move to Cambridge, to attend Harvard University. "What was I going to do? Cry about it?" she told The Shelby Star newspaper. "I just made a decision that I was not going to end up like my parents." (Read her story: Homeless, Abandoned -- and Heading to Harvard)

Talia Joy Castellano, 13, was first diagnosed with cancer in 2007. The courageous teen went through many rounds of chemo, which eventually left her bald. Since she disliked wearing wigs, she turned to cosmetics to make herself feel more confident, and about a year and a half ago launched a series of makeup tutorials on YouTube, where she quickly racked up more than 335,000 followers and close to 27 million video views. In August, she was diagnosed with a second form of cancer and, while she's not sure whether she'll endure treatment, she is determined to live what's left of her life to the fullest. When WKBT-TV morning news anchor Jennifer Livingston got an email criticizing her for her weight, she fought back against the fat-shaming with an on-air editorial that had viewers cheering. "To all of the children out there who feel lost, who are struggling with your weight, with the color your skin, your sexual preference, your disability, even the acne on your face. Listen to me right now: Do not let your self-worth be defined by bullies," she said. When the bully refused to back down, she continued to stand up to him. "What kind of message am I teaching her when my husband and I are talking about this mean email that I received and I'm not taking a stand for myself?" she said on NBC's "Today" show in October. "I can stand up for myself, there's a lot of people that can't. And I'm gonna do it." (Read her story: News Anchor Takes Fat-Shaming Bully To Task)

"This day has been one of the biggest blessings of my recent life," he told his Facebook friends. "I don't know if I can wait until another birthday to do this again. But what if it became a habit? "I'm not embarrassed or even humiliated by the attention [negative and positive] that this picture is getting, because it's who I am," she explained. The Oak Ridge Boys Improve Spirits–And Apparently Health!–Of Ailing Former President Bush Sr.

They say music has the power to heal--and in the case of George H. W. Bush, the adage seems to hold water. The former president, who has been hospitalized since November for bronchitis and related issues, was moved out of intensive care after being serenaded by country legends the Oak Ridge Boys on Friday.
The idea for the intimate concert came from former First Lady Barbara Bush, who called the band--one of her husband's favorites--and asked if they'd mind doing a special performance to cheer him up.
The Boys, who have been friends with the Bush family for years, were happy to oblige.  Although they were all on vacation at the time, they gathered in their office to sing together over the phone. "We asked what song he would like to hear," stated band member Joe Bonsall. "He said 'Elvira,'  so we blasted some oom pop a mau maus in the direction of Houston, Texas."
The band followed that with a verse from the classic hymn "Amazing Grace."
Apparently, the gesture lifted Bush's spirits enough to actually improve his health. He was transferred to a regular patient room at Houston's Methodist Hospital the following day, and his camp released a statement saying the Boys' singing was a greatly appreciated "shot in the arm."
Bush, 88, was admitted to intensive care on December 23, suffering a lingering fever and other complications. As of Saturday, his spokesperson reported the positive news that he is continuing to do better.
If you don't remember Bush's requested tune, the Oak Ridge Boys' 1981 hit "Elvira," here's a video of the group performing it back in the day, complete with its well-loved "oom pop a mau mau" chorus.

Hidden Powers of Your Mouse

Computer mouse tricks (Thinkstock)

You use your mouse for just about everything: you drag, you drop, you highlight, you scroll. But even if you click your mouse a thousand times a day, I bet I've got a few secret mouse tricks you've never heard of.

Click Tricks
You surely know that double clicking highlights a word, and you might even know that triple clicking highlights a paragraph. But have you ever wanted to select a column of text in a Word document, without getting all the text to the left and right of it? Here's how you can: Hold down the alt and left mouse button (on a Mac, option-left mouse), and drag the cursor over the section you want to select. The coolest thing about this trick is that the text you are selecting does not even need to be formatted as a column for this to work.

Scroll Tricks
Most mice have a scroll wheel. Sure, it takes you up and down on a page, but in combination with other keys, it can do much more:
  • Scroll sideways: In many versions of Excel, holding down the shift key while scrolling will take you sideways. That's super helpful in a big spreadsheet.
  • Scroll wheel as back button: In most web browsers, if you hold the shift key while using the scroll wheel, it works like the back button: You can fly through all the sites you've recently visited. (Some mice have side buttons that work like back and forward buttons in your browser, too.)
  • Scroll to zoom: Holding ctrl and scrolling lets you zoom in or out of the page you're viewing. Ctrl-scroll up zooms you in; ctrl-scroll down zooms you back out. On a Mac, this trick will zoom in and out your whole screen, not just the document you're in.
Windows-Specific Tricks
While most of the tricks I've listed so far work in either Windows or Mac OS, here are a few that are specific to Windows machines:
  • To maximize a window: drag the title bar to the top.
  • To minimize all windows except the active window: "Shake" the title bar. Then if you want to restore all the windows you just minimized with this shortcut, just click again on the title bar of the window in view.
  • To view two windows in a 50-50 split: Drag the title bar of one document to the left edge of your screen, then drag a second document to the right edge; they will snap into position in a nifty side-by-side view.
Bonus Sneaky Trick
Suppose you want to walk away from your hyper-secure work computer for a few minutes and not have to re-log in when you get back. Sure, you could change the sleep settings, but this idea is much more clever: Set your mouse on top of your analog watch or a clock. The mouse tracks the second hand's movement and it tricks your computer into thinking you're still busy working. Of course, there are valid security reasons for NOT using this trick, but I still think it's cool that it works.

Kim Kardashian Pregnant: Her Family Reacts to the Big News

Kim and Kanye. (Getty Images)Get ready for yet another Kardashian to keep up with! On Sunday night, Kanye West “announced” that he and Kim Kardashian are expecting a child together when he told the crowd at his Atlantic City concert to “Stop the music and make some noise for my baby mama,” according to a fan on Twitter who was at the show, and then reportedly pointed to his girlfriend in the audience. Although Kim – who is still married to her husband of 72 days, Kris Humphries – has yet to say anything to her nearly 17 million fans on Twitter, her rep did confirm that the reality star is pregnant. This will be the first child for both Kim, 32, and West, 35, who began dating in the spring of 2012.
Of course, the moment West, 35, made the big announcement, Kardashian’s attention-loving family took to Twitter to share their well wishes and blessings to KimYe’s unborn “kash kow.”
Youngest sister Khloe Kardashian, who has struggled to get pregnant with husband Lamar Odom, wrote, “Keeping secrets is hard with so many family members! Especially when you are so freaking excited!!!!! LOVE is everything!!!!”
Oldest sister Kourtney Kardashian, who just gave birth to her second child in July, also gushed, “Been wanting to shout from the rooftops with joy and now I can! Another angel to welcome to our family. Overwhelmed with excitement!”

Kellie Pickler Shares Remarkably Personal Moment With Fan At Concert

Most country-music lovers who attended the 2012 Ram Jam all-star concert event in Nashville Saturday were just there for a rockin' good time. However, when American Idol alum Kellie Pickler took the stage, the evening took a remarkably emotional turn, showcasing a touching and personal moment between the star and her fans.
Right after performing her rollicking 2008 hit "Best Days Of Your Life," Pickler was approached by a woman in the audience who came up to the edge of the stage. Pickler knelt down and spoke quietly to her for a few minutes, then held the teary-eyed fan in a long embrace.

photos: Andrew H. Walker / Russ HarringtonPickler, herself appearing moved, announced to the crowd, "Her sister-in-law Kelly is a breast cancer survivor." Pickler recently shaved her head in support of her best friend who was diagnosed with the same condition, and has been advocating for cancer awareness as a result.
As the audience burst into applause, she added, "I'm gonna cry up here, thank you for sharing your story with me."
A male fan then called "Can I show you a picture, Kellie?" The singer walked over to the side of the stage and examined a shot on his cellphone. She then explained to the audience: "The gentleman was showing me a picture of his mother that had passed away with lung cancer. My grandmother that raised me and that I called mom--she died with lung cancer. She was diagnosed and died the very next morning."
"It's hard stuff," Pickler noted, addressing the fan in a faltering voice. "But your mother and my grandmother are upstairs partying--they're having a good time, they're not hurting."
Pickler then related to the crowd that a big reason why she loves country music so much is how it calls up strong emotions such as the ones witnessed that night. "I think the thing that makes country music so special is that behind every country song, there's a story," she said. "A story about someone's life, and what they've been through--good or bad. Maybe what they're going through now."
The 2012 Ram Jam concert was the culmination of the yearlong Ram Jam project, which spotlighted exclusive content from five country artists and earmarked funds for a variety of charities. The Zac Brown Band, Billy Currington, Brantley Gilbert, and Easton Corbin also participated in the event.

Clinton admitted to hospital with blood clot

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivers remarks at the State Department in Washington …Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has been admitted to a New York hospital for treatment of a blood clot, her spokesman said Sunday.
State Department Spokesman Philippe Reines said Clinton had entered the hospital following a medical examination for a concussion she sustained earlier this month.
"In the course of a follow-up exam today, Secretary Clinton's doctors discovered a blood clot had formed, stemming from the concussion she sustained several weeks ago," Reines said in a statement.  "She is being treated with anti-coagulants and is at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital so that they can monitor the medication over the next 48 hours."
Reines added, "Her doctors will continue to assess her condition, including other issues associated with her concussion. They will determine if any further action is required."
Clinton was scheduled to return to work this week after treatment for the concussion. She is set to step down from her post shortly after President Barack Obama's inauguration on January 21. Last week, Obama announced he had chosen Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry to replace Clinton as the nation's top diplomat.

12 New Year resolutions for a better relationship in 2013

1. Stop fretting:
In a relationship, we tend to take our partner for granted. If there is something that is bothering you, stop picking up petty fights, instead have a talk with your partner and clear the air. Small backbiting comments tend to erode a relationship.
family 2. More and better sex: Physical intimacy plays an important role for a relationship to work. The busy lifestyle causes a loss in intimacy and it merely becomes an act. Take efforts to make your sex time fun and interesting.Do not make sex a task, instead enjoy the time togetherfamily
3. Pay attention:
When you are with your loved one, make it a point to be with them wholly. Do not divert attention on other things such as emails, texts or IM’s. In this age of technology we tend to keep multitasking even when our partner is talking. Make it a point to change this habit and listen to your partner with full attention.family 4. Show gratitude:
This year make it a point to show gratitude to your partner for their efforts. Here are some simple ways to start. Such things will boost your relationship tremendously. Your partner will feel appreciated and would make more efforts to make the relationship last.family

5. Eat healthy:
It is common to see couples putting weight on after getting married. Make a resolution to eat healthy this year. Also, both the partners should hit the gym together for motivation and support.family

6. Stop criticising:
When we spend a lot of time with someone, it becomes routine and we tend to ignore the good things about them and start criticising them. This year make sure not to criticise your spouse for small things.family

7. Be a better listener:
Don’t just listen and nod in a conversation, instead take out time and sit down to listen to your partner’s problems and worries. This is a great step in strengthening a relationshipfamily

8. Say- I love you:
Although this may sound cliché, but it is an important part of any relationship. Do not just say a casual ‘I love you’, but instead look deep in your partner's eyes and say in a way that you actually mean it. It will make your partner extremely happy and the relationship more strong.
family

9. Have fun together:
Adults find little or no time to indulge in recreational activities. Therefore take efforts to infuse some playtime in your everyday life. Have pillow-fights or play board games, role play etc. to make your time together fun and interestingfamily

10. Have a date night:
Busy couples are unable to find time to go out and relive the time they spent together previously. Therefore take efforts and make it a point to have 'date nights' regularly in order to show your partner how much you care and how the romance is still deep in your relationship.family

11. Learn to say- No:
There may be times when you may disagree but play along just to make your spouse happy. But in many cases it causes a build-up of resentment leading to fights. So, learn to say 'No' politely, where you are unhappy.
family

12. Indulge in charity: Indulge in charitable work throughout the year along with your partner, as it has a positive effect and will give you a good feeling.family
