It takes two to tango- and it took some fabulous pairing to
create some of the most remembered and remarkable films of Indian
cinema. Here is a look at some of the Director-Actress pairing that
truly spelt magic on celluloid and success at the box-office.
1. Raj Kapoor-Nargis
Few
Bollywood relationships have generated as much success and controversy
as of these two. Raj cast Nargis in his directorial debut- Aag and they
went on to work together in 16 films, six under Raj’s own banner. In
most of the films, Nargis at least once appeared in a white sari- an RK
trademark. The scene from ‘Barsaat’ with Nargis in Raj’s arms remains
the RK films’ logo till this day. It was said that Raj was in love with
Nargis, but as he was already married he had to let go of her.
2. Bimal Roy-Nutan
Bimal Roy- an iconic director and
perhaps the most decorated one in Indian cinema. Nutan – a fabulous
actor from a very talented filmy family. When these two geniuses worked
together something special was sure to be created. It happened in 1959
and the film was Sujata. Next came ‘Bandini’ in 1963. These two films
remain among the finest work of Indian cinema to this day. Both films
dealt with unconventional issues and won Best film, director and actress
Filmfare awards.
3. Guru Dutt-Waheeda Rehman
The most enigmatic
director-heroine jodi of Bollywood. Though, Guru Dutt directed Waheeda
in only two films (Pyaasa, Kaagaz ke Phool), they worked together in
five. Waheeda was Guru Dutt’s find and he brought her to Bollywood from
Telegu films. His films made her a star and in turn, Waheeda lifted his
films to another level with her acting and beauty. Guru Dutt fell in
love with her and this ruined his married life. Waheeda found success
with other banners and drifted away from him. Struggling with failure,
both personal and professional, Guru Dutt went into depression and
committed suicide.
4. Dev Anand-Zeenat Aman
Dev Anand launched several
actors’ careers through his films, but no one had such success as Zeenat
Aman. Dev Sahab was looking for someone to cast as her sister in ‘Hare
Ram Hare Krishna’ and two-film old (both flop) Zeenat caught his eye.
The success of the film made Zeenat the heartthrob of the nation and a
new partnership was born. Dev Anand cast Zeenat in many other films such
as Heera-Panna, Ishq Ishq Ishq etc. Dev Anand later admitted that he
was once in love with Aman and was going to propose to her but decided
against it.
5. Shakti Samantha-Sharmila Tagore
Sharmila started her
career with the legendary Satyajit Ray but it was Samantha who gave her a
footing in Bollywood. She established herself in popular Hindi cinema
with Samanta's Kashmir Ki Kali. Samanta again cast her in ‘An Evening in
Paris’. This film marked the first appearance of an Indian actress in a
bikini which shocked Indian audiences and set off a new trend. Samanta
later teamed up Tagore for super-hit movies such as Aradhana, Amar Prem
and Amanush. This duo, often teaming up with Rajesh Khanna or Shammi
Kapoor, changed the face of romance in Bollywood.
6. RGV-Urmila
Ram Gopal Verma is known to handpick his
heroines. He also loves to play Godfather to young faces. Of course, it
all began with Urmila Matondkar. Urmila had begun her career as a child
artist in 1981. Later, as she was struggling to find success as a
heroine, RGV gave her a break. The 1995 musical hit Rangeela,
established her both as an actor and as the new glamour girl of
Bollywood. Later, she worked in RGV projects such as Daud, Satya, Kaun,
Mast, Jungle, Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya, Bhoot and Ek Hasina Thi.
7. Karan Johar-Kajol
It is one of the most successful and
loved Director-Actor jodi. When Karan wrote his first film and was set
to direct it, Kajol was an obvious choice. While he was making his debut
with ‘Kuch Kuch Hota hai’, she was already a superstar. They had
already worked together in “DDLJ”. With this film their friendship
turned into a commercial success story also. They went on to have
another hit in ‘K3G’. As Kajol took a break from movies after marriage,
she continued to make cameo appearances in KJo’s films. It was Karan who
made her return to Bollywood for ‘My name is Khan.’
